A mini split head that drips water usually has a blocked or poorly sloped drain, a dirty filter or coil, or a coil that froze and is now thawing. A head normally pulls water out of the air and sends it outside through a drain line. If that water shows up inside, something is stopping the flow. Climate Pros Tucson can match you with a licensed pro when the checks below don’t stop it.
What are the common causes?
- A clogged condensate drain. Dust, algae and debris build up in the line. Water backs up and spills from the head.
- A dirty filter or coil. Restricted airflow can freeze the coil, and the melted ice overflows the pan.
- A crimped or badly sloped drain hose. The hose needs a steady downward slope to the outside.
- An out-of-level indoor head. If the head tilts away from the drain side, water runs the wrong way.
- Low refrigerant or a failing fan. Both can freeze the coil.
- High humidity. More moisture in the air means more water to carry.
Why does it drip more in July and August?
Tucson’s monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30 by NWS count, and at the airport, dew points jump from the 20s into the high 50s in July and August. Wetter air means a mini split removes more water, so a drain that handled spring air can fall behind. Our monsoon humidity page explains how that affects the whole system.
What can I check myself?
- Turn the unit off and let it thaw if you see ice.
- Clean or replace the filter. Most heads have a slide-out filter you can rinse.
- Look at the drain hose outside. Make sure it isn’t kinked, buried or pinched, and that water can run out.
- Look at the head’s level against the wall.
- Don’t open the unit’s case or work on refrigerant lines.
Filter care also lowers the chance of a repeat. See mini split maintenance in Tucson.
When does it need a pro?
Call a pro if water keeps returning after a clean filter, if you see ice again, if the unit smells musty, or if it also fails to cool. A pro can flush the drain, clean the coil, check the slope and check the refrigerant. For a comparison with other drain problems, see AC drain line clogged and mini split repair. Mini split repair details are on our AC repair and mini split installation pages.
