Pets add hair, dander and a heat risk to your HVAC picture. Change the filter more often, keep the outdoor unit clear, and have a plan for the day your AC fails in the heat. When it does, Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed local pro.
How do pets affect the filter?
Hair and dander load a filter faster than in a home without pets. A clogged filter cuts airflow, makes the system work harder and can freeze the coil. Check it monthly during the cooling season and replace it when it looks gray. Dust storms in the monsoon add to the load. See the filter guide for Tucson dust.
Ask the pro which filter fits your system. A thicker filter than the unit was built for can restrict airflow and do more harm than good.
What about dander and air quality?
A better filter and clean ducts help, but no system removes all pet allergens. A pro can talk through options like higher-grade filtration or an air purifier, and what your blower can handle. See whole-home air purifier and HVAC for asthma and allergies.
What about the outdoor unit?
- Keep pets from digging or urinating at the condenser. It can corrode fins and the pad.
- Keep the space around the unit clear of brush and toys.
- A cover isn’t a fix. Don’t cover a running unit.
What’s the heat risk if AC fails?
Tucson averages about 68 days a year at or above 100F, and 2024 had a record 112. Pets can’t tell you they’re overheating. If your AC fails on a hot day, move pets to the coolest room, offer water and think about a friend’s home or another cooled space. Call your vet if a pet shows heavy panting, drooling or weakness. Never leave a pet in a parked car.
We’re a referral service, not a vet, so follow your vet’s guidance on heat safety for your animal.
What should you set the thermostat to when you’re away?
There’s no single number that fits every pet and every home. Don’t let a closed house climb to extreme heat with animals inside. Ask your vet what range suits your pet, and use a smart thermostat to watch the house temperature.
Do pets change the duct or system choice?
Sometimes. Pet hair gathers in return grilles, and homes with several shedding animals may need more frequent maintenance. A pet door can leak conditioned air, so sealing it helps. See HVAC maintenance and indoor air quality. If the AC dies, read what to do while you wait. Our Tucson hub lists coverage.
