Can a whole house fan replace AC in Tucson?
Not through the summer, but it can carry some spring and fall evenings. A whole house fan doesn’t cool air. It pulls outdoor air through open windows and pushes hot attic air out of the roof. It only helps when the air outside is cooler than the air inside. Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro if you want either option looked at.
When does the fan work?
In the drier shoulder months, nights run well below the daytime high. In October the airport’s normal high is 86.3F and its normal low is 59.0F. When the night air is clearly cooler than your house, the fan can flush the heat out and leave the house comfortable by morning. Run it when you can open windows, usually after sundown and in the shoulder seasons.
When does it fail?
Summer nights don’t cool much here. The normal low in July is 76.3F at Tucson International Airport (1991-2020 normals), and the normal high in June is 101.2F. Pulling 76F air through the house isn’t cooling it. About 68 days a year reach 100F or higher.
Monsoon weeks add moisture. Dew points at the airport sit in the 20s most of the year and jump into the high 50s in July and August. A fan then pulls humid air indoors, and nothing removes the water. Dust storms also occur in the monsoon, and a fan pulls dust through every open window.
Fan vs AC compared
| Whole house fan | Central AC or heat pump | |
|---|---|---|
| Cools the air | No, moves it | Yes |
| Removes humidity | No | Yes |
| Works on a 100F+ day | No | Yes |
| Works when nights are cool and dry | Yes | Yes, but runs more than needed |
| Filters incoming air | Usually not | Through the system filter |
| Needs open windows | Yes | No |
Is a fan safe in the heat?
The CDC advises older adults to stay in air-conditioned buildings in hot weather and not rely on a fan as the main cooling when it is very hot. A fan is not a substitute for AC in a Tucson summer.
What should a pro check before install?
A fan needs attic venting sized to let the exhaust air out. Too little venting makes the fan work against itself. It can also pull combustion gases from a gas water heater or furnace if the house isn’t vented right. Ask the pro to check venting and backdrafting before you buy.
