A loud AC noise is a symptom with a short list of causes, and the type of sound narrows it fast. Shut the system off for a bang, a grinding or a scream, and call a pro. A mild hum can wait for an appointment, but don’t ignore it. Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro when the sound needs one.
What does each sound usually mean?
| Sound | Common cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Buzzing or humming | Failing capacitor, loose electrical part, contactor | Shut off and call a pro |
| Squealing or screeching | Worn motor bearing or belt | Shut off and call |
| Banging or clanking | Loose or broken part, debris in the fan | Shut off and call |
| Hissing | Refrigerant leak or a leaking valve | Call a pro |
| Gurgling | Condensate drain trouble | Check the drain line |
| Rattling | Loose panel, debris, a fan guard | Check for debris, then call |
Buzzing or humming
Capacitors and contactors wear with every start, and Tucson’s airport averages about 158 days a year at or above 90F. A buzz with a unit that won’t start is a strong sign. Don’t open the panel yourself, because capacitors hold a charge.
Squealing or screeching
That’s metal on metal or a belt slipping. It often means motor bearings are failing. Our squealing noise guide goes deeper.
Banging or clanking
Something is loose, broken or hitting the fan. After a monsoon storm or a dust storm, check the outdoor unit for sticks and debris, but shut off the breaker first. Read banging noise causes.
Hissing
A steady hiss can mean refrigerant escaping. Low charge means a leak, and topping off without a repair only delays the problem. Only technicians who hold EPA Section 608 certification may handle refrigerant. See hissing noise causes.
Is it safe to keep running?
- Mild hum with normal cooling: monitor it, and schedule a visit.
- Any bang, grind, scream or burning smell: turn it off at the thermostat and the breaker.
- Cooling has dropped along with the noise: stop and call. In July, that can’t wait long, so say so.
Does Tucson dust matter?
Yes. Dust loads filters and coils, and a strained blower makes more noise. Dust storms occur in Arizona during the monsoon, and ADOT’s advice for drivers is “Pull Aside, Stay Alive.” Your AC doesn’t get that choice, so check the filter after a big one. See AC maintenance for upkeep.
