Why does my White-Rodgers thermostat say Cool but the house isn’t cooling?

Either the thermostat isn’t sending the call for cooling, or it is and the equipment isn’t answering. Sorting out which one saves a lot of guessing. Watch the system, not only the display. If it’s the equipment, Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro.

What does the display tell you?

  • Blank screen. The thermostat has no power. Check batteries if it takes them, then the breaker for the air handler.
  • Cool shown, setpoint above room temperature. Nothing is wrong. The system is waiting. Drop the setpoint a few degrees below the room reading.
  • Cool and “Cool On” or a similar call indicator. The thermostat is calling. Now check whether the indoor blower and outdoor unit start.
  • Mode on Heat, Auto or Emergency Heat. Switch to Cool. On a heat pump, the wrong mode blows warm air.

Which checks don’t involve touching wiring?

Reset the thermostat’s setpoint and mode, replace batteries, confirm the filter isn’t clogged, and confirm the air handler’s breaker is on. A condensate safety switch can also shut cooling off when the drain line backs up, so look for water near the indoor unit. Don’t remove the thermostat cover to test wires unless you know how to cut power first.

How can equipment trouble look like thermostat trouble?

A failed capacitor, a tripped breaker or a frozen indoor coil all leave you with a thermostat that says Cool and a house that doesn’t. If the outdoor unit is silent, the thermostat is probably fine. In Tucson, check the timing too: the monsoon (June 15 to September 30) brings lightning and power flickers, and after one a tripped outdoor disconnect or a compressor delay looks just like a thermostat fault. See AC not working after a power outage. A pro can test the call signal at the equipment and tell the two apart. See AC repair.

Where can you find the manual for your model?

The model number is printed on the thermostat, often on the back plate or under the cover. White-Rodgers publishes manuals by model number on its website. The manual shows the wiring terminals and the settings menu for your exact unit.

Repair or replace?

A thermostat that loses its settings, reads the wrong temperature or has a dead display is cheap to swap compared with a repeat service call. A replacement still has to match your system, especially a heat pump or a two-stage unit. Read repair or replace a thermostat, and see thermostat installation.
