For a home in the Tucson basin, a heat pump is the sensible default. It cools your house the way an AC does, and it heats on the mild winter days Tucson gets. Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro who checks your ducts and panel before you pick.

What’s the real difference?

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of the house. In winter it moves heat in. An AC paired with a gas furnace splits the jobs: the AC cools, and the furnace burns gas to heat.

Why does a heat pump fit Tucson?

Tucson needs far more cooling than heating. Its 1991-2020 normals show about 2.6 cooling degree days for every heating degree day. The City of Tucson’s winter design temperature is 35F, and the airport sees fewer than 12 freezing nights a year. Heat pumps lose capacity in deep cold, and the basin rarely goes there.

Since you buy a system to cool anyway, a heat pump adds heating with little extra equipment.

When does AC plus a furnace still make sense?

  • You already have gas service and a furnace in good shape.
  • A pro finds your ducts or electrical panel would need major work to support a heat pump.
  • You prefer the feel of gas heat on the coldest mornings.

Statewide, Arizona’s 2020 survey figures show 25% of homes with a central heat pump as main heat and 55% with a central furnace. That’s Arizona, not Tucson. It shows both are common.

What about the mountains?

Mount Lemmon and Summerhaven are a different climate. Winters there run far colder, with about 53 freezing nights a year at one nearby station. Whether a cold-climate heat pump or backup heat fits a mountain cabin is a question for the pro.

What about rebates and efficiency?

As listed by TEP in October 2026, the Efficient Home Program offers up to $720 for a heat pump quality installation and up to $600 for an AC quality installation, through participating contractors. Federal tax credit 25C ended for installs after 2025, so a 2026 install doesn’t qualify. Confirm every amount with TEP.

ENERGY STAR air-source heat pumps start at SEER2 15.2 and HSPF2 7.8. That’s the ENERGY STAR level, not the legal minimum. Our what is SEER2 guide explains the rating. For the cost side, see heat pump vs gas furnace and heat pump installation cost.

What should you ask the pro?

  • Is my existing duct system sized for a heat pump?
  • Will you run a load calculation? The City of Tucson requires one for new and replacement equipment.
  • Who pulls the permit? The contractor does.
  • Does my project qualify for TEP’s Efficient Home rebate?

See heat pump service and AC installation for what these jobs involve, or browse the Tucson area hub.
