Which is better, a ceiling cassette or a wall-mounted mini split?
For most rooms a wall-mounted head is the simpler choice. A ceiling cassette suits a room where wall space is scarce and there’s enough depth above the ceiling to hold it. A flat roof can leave very little of that depth, so check before you fall for the look. Climate Pros Tucson matches you with a licensed pro who can measure it.
How they differ
A wall-mounted head sits high on a wall and blows air across the room. A ceiling cassette sits in the ceiling, flush with the surface, and blows air in several directions from the middle of the room.
| Wall-mounted | Ceiling cassette | |
|---|---|---|
| Install location | High on an exterior or interior wall | Recessed into the ceiling |
| Needs ceiling cavity space | No | Yes |
| Air distribution | One direction, across the room | Several directions from the center |
| Condensate drain | Usually gravity, to the outside | Often needs a pump, since the head sits high |
| Visible in the room | The whole head | A flat panel |
| Best for | Bedrooms, offices, casitas | Larger open rooms, rooms with no wall space |
What flat roofs change
If your home has a flat built-up roof, the space between ceiling and roof can be shallow, and it can hold ducts, wiring or a roof structure. A cassette needs framing space and a path for the line set and drain. In a shallow cavity, a cassette can be impossible or can need more carpentry. Homes with a pitched attic may have more room. A package unit on the roof of a home with ducts in the ceiling can crowd the same space. Ask the pro to open an access point and measure the cavity before quoting.
Dust and upkeep
Tucson dust clogs filters, and it affects both types. Wall heads are easier to reach for filter cleaning, which matters more after a monsoon dust storm. A cassette filter sits overhead, so you’ll need a stable ladder and a plan. See mini split maintenance.
Rebates
TEP’s Efficient Home program listed a mini split heat pump or AC at up to $100 per ton as of October 2026, through participating contractors. Both head types may qualify. Confirm with the contractor and TEP.
Questions for the pro
- How deep is the ceiling cavity at the planned spot?
- Does the cassette need a condensate pump, and where does it drain?
- Which head gives better air coverage in this room?
- Who patches and paints the ceiling?
