A compressor swap is one of the most expensive AC repairs, and whether it makes sense depends on the unit’s age, its warranty and its refrigerant. Each company sets its own price, so the useful move is knowing what to ask before you judge the quote.
Is a new compressor worth it, or should I replace the system?
Compare the repair quote with replacement, using the system’s age and condition. Two common rules of thumb:
- The 5,000 rule. Multiply the unit’s age in years by the repair quote. A result well above 5,000 nudges toward replacement.
- The 50% rule. If the repair costs about half of a new system, replacement usually deserves a serious look.
For the replacement side of that comparison, HomeGuide lists $5,000 to $8,300 for a standard-efficiency AC replacement, as a national figure (checked October 2026). That is not a Tucson price, and there’s no published national figure for a compressor alone. The written quote from the pro is the number that counts for your home.
Both are rules of thumb, not promises. Our repair or replace guide and the 5,000 rule page work through examples. Tucson International Airport averages about 68 days a year at or above 100F (1991-2020 normals), so a compressor here racks up long summer run hours. Weigh its age against that. See how long an AC lasts in Tucson.
What does the warranty cover?
Check the manufacturer’s certificate first. Carrier currently offers eligible replacement equipment either ten-year parts coverage or five-year parts plus three-year labor, and the labor option has to be chosen within 90 days through a participating dealer. Trane’s base and registered limited warranties cover defective parts and exclude labor. A compressor under parts warranty can still leave you paying for labor, refrigerant and any related parts. Ask the pro to put each line on the quote.
Does the refrigerant matter?
Yes. R-22 production and import ended in the US on January 1, 2020, and existing R-22 systems may still be serviced with recycled or previously produced refrigerant. Existing R-410A systems can still be serviced too. The EPA’s HFC rule limits the global warming potential of new residential equipment to 700, but it does not ban installing R-410A equipment built before 2025. Read how the refrigerant types compare for how that affects a repair. On an R-22 system, the refrigerant supply is fixed, so ask the pro to price both a repair and a replacement.
Why do compressors fail?
Compressors fail from age, electrical stress, low refrigerant, dirty coils and, often, a related part failing first, such as a capacitor. Ask the pro what killed it. A new compressor in a system with the same cause will fail again. If the breaker also trips, see AC tripping the breaker.
What should the quote spell out?
- The diagnosis and what failed.
- Parts and labor as separate lines.
- Refrigerant type and the amount involved.
- Warranty on the part and on the work.
- Whether a replacement system is quoted for comparison.
If you replace the system, TEP’s Efficient Home Program, as listed by TEP in October 2026, offers up to $600 for an AC quality installation through a participating contractor. Confirm with TEP before you sign.
